All members must sign up for a volunteer activity. Please contact Annette Anderwald for details and to sign up.
Description of Volunteer Activities
1. Open/Close
You are asked to open/close the facility on the same day you collect drop in fees if the president or one of the club executive members is unable to open or close. This means that you must stay until the gym closes that day/night. Your duties are to:
Ensure shuttles are available for play – this may mean arranging for this ahead of time
Ensure that nets/poles are neatly put away and the gym is clear of personal items or garbage before leaving the facility
Ensure that shuttles are given to the person next to open/close2. Special Events Coordination
There are 4 main events that require something special be done. These are Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and the Year end. It is completely up to you and your partner as to what this event looks like. It is your job to plan the event, communicate your plans to the other members (by email or on the website), to solicit any help you may need and to pull off the actual event. Suggestions include a dress up event, serving food or drink during play time, organizing a social event outside of badminton time, having a barbeque or whatever you choose. The point is to have even more fun than we usually do.3. Interclub Coordination
In January a tournament between our club and other Edmonton clubs takes place. It is your responsibility to communicate that this event is happening to the club members, solicit a group of people interested in playing and committing to the dates and being present for the actual tournament as the team leader.4. Collect drop-in fees from occasional users
Club members can be identified by the colored wrist bands they are wearing on nights which allow drop in play. Players not wearing wrist bands should be approached and a drop in fee of $7.00 requested. The money should be placed in the pencil case provided for this purpose. If club members have forgotten their wrist bands, check their names against the membership list.Note: If you are unable to commit to your assignment, please exchange duties amongst yourselves in advance of the date you are assigned to. Make note of this on the master schedule carried by the president. If, at the last minute you are unable to carry out your duties because of illness or unforeseen circumstances, please then and only then, contact the president at 488-4014. Thanks
Junior Program Volenteering
This year, the West Edmonton Badminton Club is trying something new. We are offering a time for families to play badminton outside of the regular “juniors only” or “adults only” times. Any kids currently enrolled in the junior program on Fridays or Saturday may bring their parents or siblings to play during the 3-5 pm time slot at St. Rose School. Similarly, any adult with a full membership may bring their children to play during this time. As long as membership or coaching fees have been paid, family members may play for free at this venue at this time.
In order for this to work there needs to be a designated adult “go-to” person for the day. The duties for this person are to:
- ensure that there are shuttles to play with by arranging with last week’s parent for a hand-over of shuttles
- ensure that nets and poles are neatly put away at the end of the day
- ensure that the gym is left tidy at the end of the day
- ensure there is a general sense of order and the gym is being used for the activity intended. Example: no horse-playing or fooling around.
- ensure that shuttles are taken home and returned for play the following Saturday
This time slot is not intended as a baby-sitting service and kids playing during this time should be playing with their family members/ other club members.
Your role:
You are asked to contribute your time by volunteering to be present in the St. Rose gym for 2 hours and a tentative schedule has been drafted. If you are unable to make these dates it is essential that you switch your time with someone else who can. Please take the initiative and do the switching amongst your parent group. If, and only if, this is not possible, contact me at 780.488.4014 of Sascha2@telus.net to let me know that I will need to be present this day.I am also asking that you call me after each session in October and November to report how many people are actually making use of this time. If we find it is not popular, we will cancel the 3-5pm time slot gym rental as of January 2009.
Thanks and I hope you enjoy being able to play with the kids.
