Search Engine Optimization

What Is SEO?

So, really – what is SEO? SEO stands for search engine optimization. In order to understand SEO, the first question should be, “What is a search engine?” Ironically, to answer this question – I will be utilizing search engines that are activated by my choice of words entered into an address bar or a search box. The search engine software program when activated will identify ‘keywords’ in my request and then accesses its data base to locate the information I have requested.

A search engine utilizes automated computer programs to browse the Internet. These programs are referred to as ‘spiders’ or ‘web crawler’. These programs methodically compile copies of visited web pages and index them to create lists that will then enable faster searches in the future. A search engine is capable of searching through millions of pages of information stored in its data base in order to find results that are ranked and presented based on relevancy to the entered query.

Chances are you have a default ‘browser’ set on your PC, tablet or other internet devices. Browsers are not search engines, although in the mind of the neophyte – they appear to be similar or perform similar functions. A web browser is an application used to view information on specific websites by accessing a website and retrieving its data. Currently, the most familiar browsers are Microsoft Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Apple Safari, and Mozilla Firefox. Microsoft Edge is the latest new browser released on July 9. 2016 by Microsoft to address the falling popularity of its Internet Explorer.

Browsers are needed to utilize and activate search engines. The search engines determine which websites your browser will be ‘taken’ to or which websites will be offered to the user to view via their chosen browser.

This is where SEO enters the picture. SEO is a method or a utilization of strategies that increases free or ‘organic’ traffic (number of viewers) to a chosen website. The more visits, the higher a website will rank. The higher a website ranks – the closer it gets to the top of the list presented to the person who is searching for information, services or products. People usually open in their browser links to websites that can be found on page one of the search engine results. This is a great advantage for any business that can achieve page one status. Getting to page one is the holy grail of SEO and the corner stone of a successful business.
